Fresh off of a 21-6 victory over Heritage on Monday night, the Dublin Varsity Football team continued their winning ways with a 35-6 victory over Castro Valley at Gaels Stadium on Saturday night. The Gaels got out to a 28-0 halftime advantage and never looked back.
Senior quarterback Anthony Armendariz threw for 286 yards, including a 66-yard touchdown pass to tight end T.J. Costello. Costello finished the night with four catches and 146 yards. Senior running back Jayden Petrus led the Gaels rushing attach with 77 yards and one touchdown while also leading the Gaels with 8 tackles.
Three players that stood out on both ends of the field were Brandon Burns, Gary Cabida, and Jake Cooney. Burns had an 11-yard rushing touchdown to go with 2 interceptions, including one that he returned 77 yards for a touchdown. Cabida had a 5-yard touchdown run and played exceptionally well on defense, while Jake Cooney controlled the line of scrimmage on offense and defense throughout the night. K.J. Sweeney also had another strong defensive performance to lead a defense that thwarted the Trojans all night.
Dublin is now 2-0 on the season and will be taking on undefeated Amador Valley on Friday, September 10th in what promises to be an exciting matchup. In addition to Varsity’s successful start to the season, the JV team also improved their mark on the year to 2-0 after defeating Castro Valley 42-6.
