Athletics Roundup: Girls Soccer and Basketball Win Home Openers, Preview of Upcoming Action

The Dublin High Varsity Girls Soccer and Basketball teams rebounded from recent defeats to win their home openers on Wednesday, December 7th.

The 3-2 win in a back-and-forth affair against Clayton Valley was the Varsity Girls Soccer team’s first of the year coming off a season-opening 2-0 loss at San Leandro last week in which the team was severely short-handed as several of their key players were still engaged with club commitments. Dublin will travel to face College Park on Saturday, December 10th (12:00) as the middle match of a triple-header before returning home to face Pittsburg next Tuesday, December 13th at 7:00 p.m.

For the Varsity Girls Basketball team, their 62-45 win over Freedom was a sign of the team’s resiliency after a heart-breaking 60-58 loss to East Union of Manteca at the Golden Valley Tournament in Merced. Dublin’s press and fast tempo forced a lot of turnovers and points in transition, as they jumped out to a 12-point lead at the half and pushed their lead over 20 points by the 3rd quarter. The Gaels are back in action on Friday, December 9th at home against Liberty (7:30) as the finale of a triple header with the JV and Freshmen teams.

Other home action taking place this week include a Boys’ Soccer doubleheader against Napa taking place today (Thursday, December 8th with JV kicking off at 4:00 an Varsity starting at 6:00). Both teams are undefeated as the JV squad is 3-0 and the Varsity team is 2-0-1 following a 0-0 tie against Castro Valley on Tuesday.

The Boys Basketball teams will all be on the road from December 8-10 competing in some highly competitive tournaments. The Varsity Boys Basketball team was selected to return to the Gridley Invitational Basketball Tournament and will open up on Thursday, December 8th against Clovis North at 4:00. All Gridley Tournament games will be broadcast live at www.norcalsportstv.com. Coming off of a 1st place finish at the Freedom Tournament, the JV Boys will have a rematch against Archbishop Mitty in the 1st round of the Newark Memorial Tournament on Thursday at 5:30, while the Freshmen Boys open up against Albany in the 1st round of the San Lorenzo Tournament (7:30).

In Wrestling, the program will be competing in three tournaments this weekend. The newly formed Girls Wrestling team will be participating in the Roger Briones Tournament in San Leandro, the Varsity Boys will compete in the Bay Area 59 in Castro Valley, while the JV team will take the mat in a local tournament at Foothill High School.
