Tournament Recap: Frosh Boys Basketball and DHS Wrestlers Claim Championships

The Dublin High School Freshmen Boys Basketball defeated two East Bay Athletic League rivals en route to winning the San Lorenzo Tournament (December 8-10). After winning their first two rounds against Albany and California, the Gaels defense was particularly stingy in a 38-28 victory over San Ramon Valley in the Championship game. Drew Lipman was named as the Tournament’s Most Valuable Player, while Emeka Ifediora was named to the All-Tournament team.

Dublin also saw six tournament championships in Wrestling, highlighted by Henry Baalman’s title for his weight class in the Bay Area 59 Classic at Castro Valley High School. Lindsey Lew was among 5 champions in their Junior Varsity tournaments and earned the distinction for the fastest pin in the tournament at just 8 seconds! Anthony Rocha, Sabriel Gonzalez, Lavenda Hafoka, and Candice Caranding also won titles in their respective Junior Varsity tournaments to cap a successful weekend in which 15 wresters in total had top five finishes.

In other tournament action this weekend, the Junior Varsity Boys Basketball team had another impressive tournament showing after advancing to the finals of the Newark Memorial Tournament before dropping a narrow 61-59 contest to Bellarmine. The Gaels defeated De La Salle for the second consecutive week, this time by a score of 50-49 following a triple overtime win in tournament play last week. The Gaels are now 6-1 overall this season. Dublin’s Varsity Boys Basketball team competed in the highly competitive Gridley Invitational Basketball Tournament where a 65-50 win over Oakland Tech was sandwiched between a 63-61 loss at the buzzer against Clovis North and a 66-58 loss to Branson.
