Jose Alvarez Hired as New Head Varsity Girls Basketball Coach

After an extensive interview process that included many highly qualified candidates, Dublin High School has officially named Jose Alvarez as its new Head Varsity Girls Basketball Coach. Coach Alvarez will replace successful longtime Head Coach Mark Wainwright, who retired at the end of the 2022-2023 season.

Coach Alvarez brings a wealth of experience, commitment, passion, and a record of success to the Girls Basketball program. Over the course of his coaching career, Coach Alvarez has helped guide his teams to multiple NCS and league championships at the Varsity level, but he has also coached at the JV level and puts a strong emphasis on the importance of player development.

In addition to his successful tenure as a Varsity Girls Head Coach, Coach Alvarez is also the founder and coach for the Team United Basketball AAU program. Several outstanding players and coaches have been a part of United teams which have gone on to compete in many of the nation’s top events, including a Nike EOT Championship.

Coach Alvarez’s mission includes creating an environment that is physically, emotionally, and socially safe…..and a program that will assist with the development of confident student-athletes and young community leaders. More than building a successful program just in terms of wins on the court, his goal is to create an outstanding culture with players that are prepared, confident, and possess a great work ethic.

Despite finishing with an overall record of 10-13 in the 2022-23 season, the Dublin High Girls Basketball program is one of the most successful programs in school history. In addition to being tied for the most league championships of any program (6), the Varsity Girls Basketball team had an unparalleled run of success where it qualified for the North Coast Section (NCS) postseason every season from 2004-2022. As recently as the 2021-22 season, the Girls advanced all the way to the NCS Division I Semifinals.

In addition to a track record of success, the Gaels only graduated two players (Soha Ahmed and Anya Sengupta) from the Varsity team and posted a winning record at the Junior Varsity level. In their regular season finale, Dublin had its most impressive outing of the season, defeating Granada 55-37. The Matadors proceeded to advance to the NCS Division I finals and the CIF NorCal Division III Semifinals, so building some momentum with a win like that over Granada will help carry some momentum for Coach Alvarez and the Gaels into the 2023-2024 season.
