Facing a 0-3 deficit at home on a soggy Saturday afternoon against Kennedy High School (Fremont) with under 20 minutes remaining in the match, the prospects looked bleak for the Dublin High Varsity Boys Soccer team. The Gaels only hope for securing a potential North Coast Section playoff spot was to earn a victory, as not even a tie would be sufficient to keep their postseason hopes alive.
What proceeded to unfold over the final 20 minutes was one of the most improbable sequence of events in the program’s illustrious history, as the Gaels exploded for 6 goals to secure a much-needed 6-3 victory. This was Dublin’s second dramatic come-from-behind victory of the week, as the Gaels also overcame a 0-1 deficit with less than 10 minutes remaining to defeat Amador Valley on Tuesday. Thomas Crowder led the way for Dublin in Saturday’s comeback by scoring 2 of the goals, while Kayke Carneiro, Shishir Bahubali, Kyle Holstrom, and Damon Petithomme added 1 goal each.
Dublin still has its work cut out for it, needing 2 wins in their final 3 matches to pull even with a qualifying .500 mark. The Gaels are currently 5-6-5 overall, but by going 2-1 this week (or better) will finish no worse than 7-7-5 overall. If the Gaels end the week 1 match below .500, there’s a possibility that they will schedule an additional match before the deadline set by NCS (February 15th).
On the hardwood last weekend, it was business as usual for Dublin High School’s Varsity Boys and Girls Basketball teams as they both ended on a high note.
The Varsity Boys jumped out to an insurmountable 17-point advantage after 3 quarters of play and held on for a 62-54 victory at home over Granada on Friday. Dublin is now 21-3 overall and 5-2 in the EBAL Heading into a showdown on Tuesday at San Ramon Valley. The Wolves are two spots ahead of the games in the consequential Maxpreps rankings to determine who qualifies for the NCS Open Division, and 1 game ahead of the Gaels in the EBAL standings, making it a really important game.
For the Varsity Girls team, they had a monstrous week where they won each of their 4 games by margins of no less than 30 points. After starting the week with wins over Amador Valley (73-29) and Bethel (55-24), the Gaels continued their dominant ways by defeating Granada (69-42) on Friday night and Liberty (65-34) on Saturday. Dublin is now 18-4 overall and 5-2 in EBAL. If the Gaels can win at Dougherty Valley this Friday night, they will finish 4th for the regular season and earn a bye for the first two rounds of the league playoffs.
