The Dublin High School Varsity Baseball team continued its record-setting start to the 2025 season by sweeping its three games this week to win the Alhambra Easter Tournament. At 14-2 overall, this is the fastest start for the program in at least over 20 years, and is quite possibly the best start in school history.
Two of Dublin’s opponents – Clayton Valley and Alhambra – were ranked among the Bay Area’s top 20 teams heading into the tournament. In the case of Clayton Valley, the Eagles came into their matchup with Dublin undefeated before suffering their first loss at the hand of the Gaels. The tournament victories have allowed Dublin to climb in both the Maxpreps rankings and the Bay Area News Group’s rankings.
Despite getting outhit in their tournament opener against Northgate, the Gaels jumped out to a 7-0 lead and held on to defeat the Broncos 7-3. Elijah McNeal led the Gaels offensively by going 2-for-3, while Willie Maya earned the victory.
The Semifinal game against Clayton Valley was tight in the early innings before Dublin scored three runs in the 4th inning to break the game open and go on to post a 5-1 victory. Brendan Moddelmog was the key offensive contributor for Dublin by going 3-for-4 from the plate (including a triple) while scoring two runs. Andrew Zorinch earned the victory after 6 innings of work shutting down a potent offense.
In the Championship game under the lights against the host Alhambra, Dublin trailed for most of the game and entered the 6th inning facing a 3-1 deficit. The Gaels proceeded to score 5 runs in the decisive frame to take control of the game, and then added an insurance run in the 7th inning to win by a score of 7-3.
Dublin had a balanced offensive attack in the tournament final, as Moddelmog, McNeal, and Matthew Phelps recorded two hits apiece to pace an offense that finished with 11 hits total. Moddelmog had 2 RBI’s along with Brandt Nunemacher, while Phelps pitched the final 2 1/3 of scoreless ball while striking out three to earn the win.
The excitement within the Dublin High Baseball program is not just limited to the Varsity squad. As we enter the final month of the season, but the Junior Varsity and Freshmen teams are off to fantastic starts. The JV team has posted an 11-2 overall record, while the Freshmen team has an overall record of 12-2. With a combined record of 37-6, it is very likely that this is the best start for all 3 teams in the program’s history.
