The Dublin High School Varsity Girls Tennis team continued making history as it claimed its first ever North Coast Section title last Saturday, November 16th at James Logan High School. It was only the 3rd ever NCS appearance for the Gaels, who already made history earlier in the year by going undefeated in the East Bay Athletic League and winning its 2nd consecutive EBAL Valley Division title.
After home victories over California (6-1) and American (7-0) in the first two rounds of the NCS Division 1 Tournament, the Gaels knew they would have their hands full facing the top seed Miramonte. It was a close match throughout as the Gaels and Matadors traded victories to even the score at 3-3 before EBAL Singles champion Maya Peav won the decisive match before a large crowd to give Dublin a 4-3 victory. Peav took control of the match early and withstood a comeback attempt to seal the win.
Dublin then advanced to the finals where it faced #3 seed Redwood. Unlike the Semifinal match, the team outcome was never in doubt as the Gaels quickly swept all four singles matches to post the victory and win the championship. Maya Peav, Madyson Peav, Olivia Halim, and Kashvi Ravi never dropped a single set en route in either match en route to the victory.
The Gaels momentum from the Team Tennis tournament carried over to the NCS Singles/Doubles Championships. Maya Peav ended up finishing in 2nd place overall after falling just short in a grueling 4-hour tournament final. Madyson Peav reached the NCS Singles Semifinals, while Kashvi Ravi and Alyssa Ma advanced to the NCS Doubles Quarterfinals.
Dublin’s season is not over yet though, as they will carry their 17-1 overall record into their first ever appearance in the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) Northern California (NorCal) Regional tournament. The Gaels earned the #2 seed and will face #7 Chico of the Northern Section in their 1st round match. If Dublin wins, it will face the winner of the match between perennial powers Menlo and Davis.
The CIF NorCal Tournament is tentatively scheduled to begin at the Broadstone Sports Club in Folsom on Saturday, November 23rd at 11:30 a.m. However, the recent storms are already causing havoc on the event before it has started, as it has already been rescheduled twice. If Saturday’s matches are rained out, they will likely be made up sometime over the Thanksgiving Break.
