It was a successful week for Dublin High School’s Athletics, as the Varsity Boys and Girls Basketball teams and Varsity Boys and Girls Soccer teams all posted victories.
The most dramatic moment of the week came from our Varsity Boys Basketball team, as Donovan Cooks hit a three-point shot at the buzzer to give Dublin a hard-fought 59-56 victory in front of a raucous crowd at Granada on January 12th. The Matadors are one of the most highly regarded teams in the East Bay so it was an impressive win for the Gaels, who improved to 8-3 overall (2-0 in EBAL) this season heading into a showdown at De La Salle on January 19th
Dublin’s Varsity Girls Basketball team also notched their 8th win of the year by going on the road to defeat Livermore 69-17 on January 14th. The win was the 5th time this season where the Gaels held their opponents to 20 or fewer points, and comes on the heels of a narrow 41-44 home loss to an undefeated Matador squad on Wednesday. Dublin is now 8-5 overall and 1-1 in league play as it returns home to face Carondelet next Wednesday (1/19).
In soccer, the Boys Varsity Soccer team won its fourth consecutive match against teams in the East Bay Athletic League’s Valley Division before dropping a tough 0-2 decision at De La Salle on January 13th. Dublin trailed by just a goal late in the match and had several chances to even the match, but ultimately gave up a late goal with everyone playing up in an attempt to score the equalizer. Even with the loss to the Spartans, the Gaels are still in strong contention within EBAL at 4-1 (7-4-2 overall) and will resume its Valley Division schedule when it hosts Amador Valley on January 18th
Dublin’s Varsity Girls Soccer team improved its win streak to three consecutive matches after knocking off Livermore 4-0 on Tuesday. The Gaels returned home on Thursday and played an undefeated Carondelet squad even for the first 60 minutes before giving up 3 goals in the match’s final 20 minutes to fall 0-3. Despite the loss, the Gaels are still in excellent playoff position at 8-3-2 overall (2-2-1 in EBAL) as they travel to face the Dons next Tuesday
Wrestling had its two Dual Meets against Dougherty Valley and Foothill postponed this week, but is looking to get back on the mat on January 15th in a tournament at Granada. On Tuesday, January 18th they will be celebrating both Senior Night and their home opener simultaneously as they host Livermore (JV at 6:00, Varsity at 7:00).
At the lower levels, our basketball teams in particular are experiencing tremendous success. The Freshmen Boys have won 10 consecutive games and are 13-1 overall this season. Similarly, Dublin’s JV Girls only have one defeat and are now 9-1 overall this season, while the Freshmen Girls have a winning record at 3-2. The JV Boys have also had a lot of success with a week highlighted by two close EBAL wins on the road, including an overtime win at Granada and a 72-68 victory at Amador Valley, improving to a 12-3 mark overall.
