History was made at Dublin High School on Wednesday, January 25th as it hosted its first-ever Girls Wrestling Dual Meet against Castro Valley. The Gaels performed exceptionally well and came away with a 45-15 victory over the Trojans, which is just the latest in a string of successes for the flourishing program.
In tournament action the past two weeks, the Girls have placed high as a team and have had several outstanding individual performances starting with the Lady Grizzly Tournament on January 14th. The Gaels took 3rd place as a team, which was the first time they placed in the top three in a tournament in school history. Lana Nguyen led the way by finishing in 2nd place, Marissa Macias and Payton Dehnert came in 3rd place, and Navjot Waraich finished in 5th place.
The following weekend in the San Ramon Valley Invitational, the Girls performed even better by notching their first ever tournament title! Macias came in 1st place in her event, Lavenda Hafoka took 2nd in her weight class, and Navjot Waraich and Candice Carandang finished in 3rd place to help lead the Gaels.
The Boys team has also had some strong performances in recent weeks, led by Henry Baalman’s showing in two prestigious invites. Baalman finished in 3rd place in the Tim Brown Tournament and Midcals, both events which featured state-level competitors. George Yu also recorded some impressive results in recent weeks coming in 4th place and 3rd place in his tournaments.
There will be one final tune-up for both the Boys and Girls teams heading into the East Bay Athletic League Championships which will be held in the Dublin High Sports Complex and Auxiliary Gym on February 10-11. The Gaels have added a Girls/Boys Dual Meet at Dougherty Valley to their schedule next Tuesday, January 31st at 6:00.
