It promises to be a scene reminiscent of the COVID-era (absent the masks) as virtually every single athletic facility on the Dublin High School campus will be in use on Thursday, March 16th. In total, there will be 10 different teams in action, with eight of the events taking place at home.
One late addition to the slate of events for Thursday is the East Bay Athletic League (EBAL) opener for the Dublin High Varsity Baseball team. The game was originally scheduled for Wednesday, March 15th but was postponed by one day due to soggy field conditions from the recent storm. Dublin and San Ramon Valley will now take to the Gaels’ home diamond on Thursday, March 16th at 4:00.
The Gaels and Wolves will also be pitted against each other in Varsity Boys Tennis in a match starting at the same time (4:00). In other matinee action starting at 4:00 on Thursday, the Varsity Softball will have its EBAL home opener against Amador Valley and the Freshmen Baseball team will be taking on Liberty in a nonleague contest.
As afternoon turns to evening, the Junior Varsity and Varsity Boys Volleyball teams will also be playing in their EBAL home openers after going on the road for their first three matches. The JV team will be taking the court in the Sports Complex against Livermore at 5:00, with the Varsity match against the Cowboys scheduled to start at 6:00. Both the JV and Varsity teams have played well in their first three matches and are expected to be very competitive this season.
The Stadium will also be lit up on Thursday night for a rare Varsity Girls and Boys Lacrosse doubleheader. The Girls will be hosting Oakland Tech at 5:30 in a game that will be followed by the Boys taking on Northgate at 7:00.
In addition to the eight home events, the Varsity Boys Golf team will be headed to the Diablo Country Club to take on De La Salle (3:30), while the JV Boys Tennis team is going on the road to face San Ramon Valley at 4:00.
Looking ahead to the weekend, Dublin High School is poised to host what may be the largest high school track event in the nation with the Dublin Distance Fiesta. The annual event has grown so large it now spans two days, and will take place on Friday, March 17th and Saturday, March 18th at Gaels Stadium. There are 170 high schools registered (including 4 from Nevada), with 3,346 athletes competing in 5,170 events. This surpasses last year’s record of 2,946 athletes from 149 schools which competed in 4,319 events.
There will also be a “Middle School Mile” to kick off the meet on Friday. Admission for each day is $13 for adults and $6 for children over the age of 4, high school students, and senior citizens (over 60). The event will be on Friday from 4:00-10:00 p.m. and on Saturday from 8:00 a.m. -10:00 p.m.
