The 2022-2023 school year saw many Dublin High programs and student-athletes celebrate success while competing in one of Northern California’s toughest leagues – the East Bay Athletic League (EBAL).
One of the highlights of the year for the Gaels was when the school launched its first ever Boys and Girls Water Polo programs in the fall. The teams practice and host their games at The Wave, which is also home to the Swim Teams and one of Dublin High’s most accomplished athletes Kaitlin Lee, who finished 2nd at the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) State Meet in the 500m.
Several other Dublin High athletes qualified for CIF State competitions this past year, including Alexander Franco who recently was a medalist at the State Track Meet. Franco was a pivotal contributor on last year’s North Coast Section (NCS) championship team, taking 1st place in the 400m, and was joined by Joshua Arevalo, Sebastian Guinther, and Manyu Yara to win the 4x400m Relay at the NCS Meet of Champions. In Girls Track and Field, Leila Champion emerged as the EBAL champion in the 100m and 200m, while Victoria Bradley took 1st place in EBAL for the Pole Vault. Earlier in the year, Medha Gowda was the EBAL champion for a Cross Country program that most recently won five consecutive NCS titles.
This season also saw several team milestones as well. The Boys Basketball team became the first team at Dublin High to qualify for five consecutive appearances in the CIF State Tournament, and continued its streak as the only team to qualify for the prestigious NCS Open Division since its inception. The Gaels came within a game of winning an EBAL title playing before the largest home crowd in school history, as Boys Basketball maintains its status as one of the school’s most accomplished teams.
Two other teams celebrated historic success this season. The Boys Volleyball team won the most matches in program history (21) and finished atop the EBAL standings at the end of the regular season and advanced to the NCS Semifinals. Meanwhile, the Baseball team celebrated its best season since 2006 after finishing 16-9, winning the El Camino Tournament and beating 3 of the top 4 teams in NCS during the regular season (including eventual CIF NorCal Champions De La Salle).
Dublin High also attained top ten finishes among the 178 NCS member schools in Badminton (5th), Girls Wrestling (7th), and Girls Golf (9th), while the Girls Volleyball team also notched a postseason victory. In addition, this was the 3rd full season (excluding the shortened COVID spring season) which saw the Gaels finish with a winning record in Football (6-4), as Dublin came within a play of winning the EBAL Valley Division title before falling in overtime to Foothill.
In total, 16 of Dublin High’s teams and/or individuals qualified for NCS, at least 20 student-athletes will be continuing their athletic careers at the collegiate level, and a whopping 81 student-athletes earned All EBAL honors. Dublin High School now proudly offers 24 CIF sports that participate on 64 teams, and also offers 8 additional club sports as well.
Looking ahead to the upcoming season, Dublin High School will be launching a Girls Flag Football team in 2023 under the leadership of Nakisha Harris. Another new addition to the coaching staff will be Girls Basketball Coach Jose Alvarez, who won 2 NCS titles while at Moreau Catholic and will take over a Girls program that had 19 consecutive NCS playoff appearances (2004-2022). So the future definitely looks bright for Dublin High School Athletics
