ATHLETICS ROUNDUP – FOOTBALL BACK IN ACTION UNDER THE LIGHTS, BOYS XC CONTINUES TO SHINE

Dublin Footbal Varsity Scrimmage 3 6 21 scaled

After a record 16-month layoff and nearly 12 months to the date since the last event was held under the lights at Gaels Stadium, the Dublin High School JV and Varsity Football teams finally were able to take the field again, as they squared off against Campolindo in a Scrimmage at on Saturday night.

Despite the fact that the format of the scrimmage did not allow for keeping score and the players were geared up in practice uniforms (per CIF rules), it was nonetheless an exciting moment for players and coaches alike. In fact, there was even a spontaneous gathering near midfield following the Varsity Scrimmage where the participants thanked each other for the opportunity to play again.

There were a lot of positive things to build from following the Scrimmage, especially for the Varsity team which played fairly even with one of Northern California’s perennial top squads. The positive showing against a top-tier team program bodes well for Dublin as they prepare for their official season opener at California High School next Saturday, March 13th as well as their league contests in the always competitive East Bay Athletic League.

The Gaels contest against the Grizzles will be live-streamed on GaelsTV with the JV kicking off at 4:00 p.m. and Varsity kicking off at 7:00. Spectators will be limited to just immediate households of participants. Dublin’s official season home-opener will be their first EBAL Valley Division contest, which will be against Granada on March 20th. Similar limits on spectators will be in effect, but that game will be on GaelsTV as well.

Football was not the only exciting event taking place at Gaels Stadium on Saturday. In Boys Varsity Cross Country action, Dublin Gaels finishing in first place out of 6 participating teams with a total score of 26 while averaging 15:34 throughout the race. Some top performers included junior Daniel Tampe who finished third overall followed by senio, Grayson Young to come in 4th place. Dublin also had the fifth and 6th place finishers respectively (Sharvin Manjrekar and Joshua Turpin). Monta Vista came in second place with 39 points, holding the 2-7-9-10-11(13) positions. Amador Valley came in third with a total score of 79.

In very close 3 mile race throughout, Dougherty Valley won the Varsity Girls race while Monte Vista came in at second. The Wildcats finished with a score of 28 and held the 2-3-6-8-9(10) positions, averaging 18:22 for the entirety. Monte Vista finished with a score of 35, averaging 18:35 throughout the race.
