The Dublin High School Varsity Football team won its season opener on “Monday Night Football” in impressive style, knocking off Heritage 21-6. The win was significant because the Patriots came into the game ranked 25th in the Bay Area, and the Gaels were predicted to lose by all three sports writers with the Bay Area News Group who cover high school sports.
Dublin raced out to a 21-0 halftime lead powered by three touchdown passes from Anthony Armendariz to T.J. Costello. Armendariz finished the game completing 9-of-13 passes to lead an offensive attack that kept Heritage off balance throughout the entire first half in which the Gaels built what proved to be an insurmountable lead.
The real story of the night though was the Gaels’ bone-crushing defense. Dublin gave up less than 100 yards in total offense, and was able to thwart a highly vaunted Heritage rushing attack all night. The Gaels bottled up the Patriots’ top rusher holding him to 50 yards on 27 carries, and they stopped several Heritage scoring attempts when turnovers or penalties gave the Patriots the ball in Gaels’ territory.
In addition, after finishing the spring season winless, the Junior Varsity squad posted a 20-14 victory over Heritage. Dublin’s next game is against Castro Valley on Saturday, September 4th at 7:00 p.m.
