Athletics Recap: Stunt Cheer Wins Season Finale, Baseball Keeps Rolling

The Dublin High School Stunt Cheer team capped its most successful season in the history of the program by going on the road to defeat Dougherty Valley 16-7 last Friday, April 22nd. The Gaels were able to perform several difficult routines it had never attempted, and were able to give its nine seniors a great send off. This was the first of Dublin High’s 12 spring sports to wrap up competition this season.

Dublin and Dougherty Valley battled in two other sports this week as well, as both the Track and Field and Swim teams took in the Wildcats in their final tune-ups for the East Bay Athletic League meets which start this upcoming weekend. There was particular excitement for the Swim team in its Meet, as our Varsity Boys beat a thirteen-year-old team record by almost half a second going a 1:29.73 in the 200 Free Relay. Congratulations to Benjamin Ohrr, Jino Andres Nicolas, Conan Wang, and Max Cory. In addition, three other records were broken by Max Cory and Kaitlin Lee.

Meanwhile, the Baseball program is now poised to extend its season at least another two weeks after dramatic extra inning victories over both Monte Vista and Granada this week. Jackson Schofield’s double lifted the Gaels to a 3-2 home victory over the Mustangs on Wednesday. Schofield also went 2-for-4 along with Carston Pearson in Friday’s win at Granada. Cole Gaynor pitched another gem to keep things close, while Freshman Brendan Moddelmog came entered in the final innings to earn the victory. Moddelmog also went 3-for-5 and had the game-winning RBI to help his cause on the mound.

The Gaels improved to 12-7-1 overall and are now well-positioned to earn berths into the EBAL Playoffs and North Coast Section tournament as well. They host the final four games of the regular season starting with a rematch against Amador Valley on Wednesday, April 27th at 4:00 p.m.. The Gaels have defeated the Dons in their two previous encounters this season

Another team with postseason aspirations and a lot of home contests to close out the regular season is Boys Volleyball. After a week where the program was shut down due to COVID, they finish the year with an unprecedented five contests in the final week, with four of them at home including a rare doubleheader on Monday, April 25th where the Gaels will be hosting California at 4:30 p.m. followed immediately afterward by a home match against Amador Valley (6:30 p.m.). Dublin enters the week 9-4 in EBAL and still has an outside chance to claim a share of the league title. With a successful final week, the Gaels can also improve their likelihood of earning a higher seed and a 1st round home match when the NCS Tournament begins next week.

The Boys Lacrosse team is also looking for victories in their final week on the road against Granada and Dougherty Valley in pursuit of their first NCS berth in nearly a decade. Dublin’s Girls Lacrosse teams will be at home against the Matadors on Tuesday (4/26) and on Senior Night against Dougherty Valley on Friday (4/29) to finish their regular season.

In other highlights this past week, the Boys Tennis team avenged a loss to California earlier this season by sweeping the Grizzlies 9-0 on April 18th. The Gaels also defeated Granada as well to cap a successful week, and will be back in action for their home finale and Senior Day this Tuesday, April 26th at 4:00 p.m. against Dougherty Valley. The Softball team will also be at home on Tuesday 4/26 at 4:00 to take on Amador Valley following their a 2-0 win over Los Banos in the Tracy Tournament. Dublin defeated Amador Valley 12-5 on Senior Night for Badminton, while Dublin also beat Foothill 9-1 in Hockey. The Gaels Hockey team will have its next contest at Dublin Iceland on Friday, April 29th against Granada at 5:30.
