Athletics Roundup: Boys Volleyball Makes NCS, Overtime Victories, JV Success, and Senior Nights

For the first time since winning the North Coast Section title in 2001, the Boys Volleyball team ended a 21-year postseason drought and earned a berth into the Division I tournament as the #9 seed. The Gaels will be traveling to face Liberty High School of Brentwood TONIGHT (Tuesday, May 3rd) at 7:00 p.m. If the Gaels prevail, they will likely be going up against #1 seed College Park on Thursday, May 5th. Dublin has not played Liberty this season, but they did compete well against the top-seeded Falcons before losing in 4 sets.

Dublin finished the regular season 11-7 in East Bay Athletic League action, a remarkable feat considering that seeds #2-4 in the Division I bracket were all from the EBAL (Amador Valley, Granada, Foothill) along with #2 seed De La Salle in Division 2. San Ramon Valley also earned a high seed in the Division 2 bracket at #5, while Dougherty Valley rounded out the EBAL teams to qualify for NCS with a #11 seed in Division 1.

The Gaels received good preparation in the final week of the regular season with 5 matches, including four against playoff opponents. The highlight of the week for Dublin was a victory in 4 sets over Dougherty Valley on Senior Night. Kavi Chopra led the Gaels with 11 kills while Kevin Zhu finished with 8 kills. Both Chopra and Zhu were set up by Shashank Thapa who finished the match with 21 assists. Dublin also took EBAL champion Amador Valley to 5 sets and also took #3 seed Granada before 5 sets before losing the 5th 15-12 in both contests.

Not to be outdone by the Varsity Boys Volleyball program, the Junior Varsity squad finished the season at 19-1 overall. Despite their lone loss coming in EBAL action at De La Salle, the Gaels still finished the regular season with the best record in league play.

The Boys Volleyball team wasn’t the only one celebrating Senior Nights late last week. The Girls Lacrosse team had their Senior Night on Friday, April 29th where they honored 10 players competing in their final game. Despite losing 20-5 to Dougherty Valley, the squad boasted a lot of talent at the freshman and sophomore levels and is looking forward to a brighter future. The Boys Lacrosse team also finished their final game of the season against the Wildcats, dropping a close contest 8-6. The following night, several members of the Boys Lacrosse team took to the ice and helped the Gaels’ Hockey team earn an overtime win over Granada to keep their playoff hopes alive.

In other action, Karthikeya Gannavarapu made it to the EBAL Singles Semifinals before losing in a 3rd set tiebreaker to conclude the Tennis season for the Gaels. Dublin’s Softball team lost a close battle to Foothill 9-7 and a game the following day to one of the Bay Area’s top teams (Granada). Dublin Baseball also battled one of the Bay Area’s top teams (Foothill), trailing just 3-1 heading into the 6th inning before falling 6-2 to the Falcons. Despite the setbacks, the Baseball and Softball teams continue their quest for postseason berths with their final regular season games at home this week against Livermore and Dougherty Valley. Senior Day for the Softball team is on Thursday, May 5th and Senior Day for the Baseball team is on Friday, May 6th. Both games start at 4:00.
