Coming off a week in which the Dublin High School Boys Varsity Basketball Team went 4-1 against the Bay Area’s top teams (including a sweep over De La Salle), many expected the Gaels to roll in its opener for this week against California High School. However, the Gaels were locked in a tight battle throughout before pulling away in the fourth quarter for a tougher than expected 81-73 victory thanks to a red hot shooting performance and inspired effort from the Grizzlies.

The Gaels escaped a highly entertaining game full of runs behind T.J. Meagher’s 27 points. Courtney Anderson Jr. wielded his way to 18 points with many drives to the basket and Caleb Oden capped his night up with an electrifying alley-oop dunk, which led to the Gaels big fourth quarter.  The contest was played in the Auxiliary (i.e. “old”) Gym due to AP testing, which was the first game played in the facility since 2010 after hosting the Gaels for 40 years (1970-2010).

After a slow start for both teams, the Gaels jumped to a 36-27 lead midway through the second quarter and appeared to be pulling away before a late run by the Grizzlies pulled them to within 41-39 at the break. California’s run continued into the second half as the Grizzlies took a 62-61 lead going into the fourth that was stretched to 66-64 lead with 5:00 remaining. However, the Gaels locked in on the defensive end and allowed the Grizzlies to score only 7 points the rest of the quarter, capping of an impressive 19-7 run to finish the final minutes of the game, running away with the victory.

The Dublin High School Gaels Varsity Boys Basketball Team looks to carry this momentum to their next game, which is Senior Night on Wednesday against Pittsburg at 5:30 p.m. in the Sports Complex (with live-stream on GaelsTV).

In other action, the Varsity Boys Lacrosse team won its 3rd straight by knocking off Foothill 10-7 in a rare Monday afternoon contest. Dublin’s final home game of the season will be on Tuesday, May 18th against Amador Valley (7:00 in the Stadium with live-stream on GaelsTV) before finishing the season on the road at Livermore and Dougherty Valley.
