Athletics Roundup: Girls Basketball and Boys Lacrosse Finish on Winning Note

The Dublin High School Varsity Girls Basketball team won its season finale in dramatic fashion to finish the year with a winning record (5-4), while the Varsity Boys Lacrosse team ended with the year with its highest winning percentage in the program’s history following the last day of competition in both sports.

The Girls’ basketball team’s win over Amador Valley on May 27th was particularly impressive considering that the Dons came into the contest with a record of 9-2 and had just defeated the Gaels the previous evening 60-49. Dublin came out inspired on Senior Night and jumped out to a 32-18 advantage at the break. The Dons’ press gave Dublin problems in the second half, as they went on a 27-12 run to pull ahead 45-44 midway through the 4th quarter. Dublin was able to withstand the run, and Bella Maestas sank two clutch free throws with 0:29 remaining to send the game into overtime. The extra period was close throughout, but Dublin was able to prevail 63-61 behind 24 points from Kendra Grant and 14 from Rachel Grier. Grant, Maestas, and Brianna Fong are the only players to graduate this season, and with a JV team that dropped only one game and a Freshmen squad that went undefeated, the future prospects for the program are exceptionally bright.

Similar to how the Girls Basketball team rebounded from a previous loss to their opponent (Amador Valley), the Boys Lacrosse team avenged an early season overtime loss to Dougherty Valley by going on the road to beat the Wildcats in resounding fashion 11-5 in the season finale on May 27th. Dublin jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the game’s opening minutes and lead comfortably throughout the contest. The Gaels would end the season by winning 4 of its last 6 games, including a record 3-game winning streak in mid-May. In another similarity with the Girls Basketball program, the Boys Lacrosse team only loses 3 seniors and is looking to build some momentum from its strong finish and is poised to have its first winning record in the history of the program in the upcoming 2021-2022 season.
