Boys Basketball Wins EBAL Opener at Foothill

After a tumultuous 16-day period for the Varsity Boys Basketball team which saw the cancellation of its 4-game Classic at Damien Tournament and a postponement of their game at Amador Valley, the Gaels were finally able to take the floor on January 7th and came away with a 59-52 victory at Foothill.

The omicron variant of COVID-19 left the Gaels with only 9 players for their East Bay Athletic League opener. Dublin hadn’t played since its 77-58 win against Kennedy-Fremont on December 22nd, and had only been able to have a handful of practices in the stretch leading up to their tilt against the Falcons.

Dublin led Foothill 14-10 after the first quarter, and then proceeded to go on a 14-4 run to build a 28-14 advantage midway through the second quarter. The Gaels and Falcons largely traded buckets for the remainder of the contest, as Dublin was never able to extend its lead but never saw it shrink below double-digits until the game’s final minute.

Mekhi Thomas scored 19 points while Courtney Anderson Jr. added 17 points to lead the Gaels offensively. Donovan Cooks led the team with 10 rebounds while Adam Moore made several key contributions on both ends of the floor.

Dublin is now 7-3 overall (1-0 EBAL) heading into a key battle on the road against emerging EBAL powerhouse Granada on Wednesday, January 12th. The Gaels will return home to take on Livermore on Friday, January 14th before finishing the week to make up its game at Amador Valley the following afternoon. Tipoff for the games against the Matadors and Cowboys will be at 7:00 and their contest against the Dons takes place at 5:00.

The JV squad improved its record to 9-3 overall after coming away with a 16-point victory while the Frosh game was postponed with a new date time still TBD.
